SABA North America Awards

 

The South Asian Bar Association of North America has a proud tradition of honoring its members and supporters for their remarkable achievements in the practice of law at its Annual Conference. At this time, SABA North America is in the process of soliciting nominations for these awards and we need your help. Please complete the Nomination Form to nominate an individual or organization. SABA North America Award Categories

 

SABA North America Pioneer Award

Pioneers are individuals who venture into unknown or unclaimed territory or who open new areas of thought. The SABA North America Pioneer Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated professional excellence and true innovation in the practice of law. A candidate for this award must be a Pioneer in their legal field or industry and must have demonstrated dedication and service towards the profession or to SABA North America's goals and objectives which include: promoting the professional development of the South Asian legal community through networking, education advocacy and mentoring; ensuring the civil liberties of the South Asian community; serving the legal interests of the South Asian community and the community at large; encouraging greater participation by the South Asian community in the legal profession and the government.

 

SABA North America Corporate Counsel Achievement Award 

The SABA North America Corporate Counsel Achievement Award is given to an individual who demonstrates extraordinary leadership and innovation in or through their in-house practice. Criteria for evaluation may include the following: career accomplishments including demonstrated success over multiple years, growth of the legal department in numbers, expansion of responsibility and role within the corporate legal department, significant and/or noteworthy contributions made to the company, dedication to corporate responsibility, advocacy for the legal profession; and, preferably, a demonstrated commitment to diversity including leadership in diversity initiatives, involvement in organizations dedicated to improving diversity in the legal field, promoting diverse hiring both within the corporate legal department and of outside counsel, success in the nominee’s legal organization on the issue of diversity, and participation in company diversity programs and initiatives.

 

SABA North America Public Interest Achievement Award

The SABA North America Public Interest Awards honors that attorney or organization that shows a deep commitment to public service of the South Asian community and community at large. Criteria for evaluation may include the following: interesting and innovative models of practice and representation; contributions to the public interest legal field; representation of individuals or organizations relating to issues affecting the South Asian community and/or the community at large; and advocacy for underprivileged, disenfranchised and under-represented minority groups.

 

SABA North America Cornerstone Award (up to 4 individuals can be recognized)

Cornerstone Award recipients are individuals who are the “cornerstones,” the foundations, of the South Asian Bar. They exemplify the objectives of the organization through their legal work or their involvement with SABA North America or local SABA chapters. Criteria for evaluation may include the following: promoting the professional development of the South Asian legal community through networking, education advocacy and mentoring; ensuring the civil liberties of the South Asian community; serving the legal interests of the South Asian community and the community at large; encouraging greater participation by the South Asian community in the legal profession and the government.

 

SABA North America Diversity Champion Award

The Diversity Champion Award honors a corporation or law firm that demonstrates a commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. Criteria weighed may include the Champion’s internal and external efforts to increase diversity; innovative approaches to increasing diversity; the percentage of minority partnership and associates in the firm or company; the types of diversity programs and initiatives sponsored and/or implemented by the firm; and the pro bono initiatives undertaken by the firm. Diversity includes race and ethnic origin, gender, physical abilities, religious beliefs, age, sexual orientation, and/or perceived differences. 

SABA North America Rising Star Award (up to 5 individuals can be recognized)

The SABA North America Rising Star Award recognizes a lawyer who is under 40 years old or has been practicing for less than 10 years. They should exemplify a broad range of high achievement in their practice area, innovation, leadership, legal and community service and commitment to diversity. 

 

SABA North America Outstanding Program Award

The SABA North America Outstanding Program of the Year will be awarded to that Committee, Section or Chapter who has created either a stand-alone or series of programs which best exemplify SABA North America's mission, which may include the following:  promoting the professional development of the South Asian legal community through networking, education, advocacy and mentoring; ensuring the civil liberties of the South Asian community; serving the legal interests of the South Asian community and the community at large; encouraging greater participation by the South Asian community in the legal profession and government. Other criteria to be considered include: SABA and non-SABA member participation, substance, theme, innovation, message and impact.
