SABA Conference Justification Toolkit

We know sometimes the decision to join us for SABA’s Annual Conference is not just yours. Because of financial considerations, you may need to convince your employer, your boss or supervisor, or a partner at your firm. We have created some resources to help you navigate those considerations and show others the tremendous value of attending SABA’s Annual Conference! 


SABA’s Conference attracts hundreds of South Asian attorneys each year and provides an opportunity for attendees to network, build ties in the South Asian community, and strengthen their career knowledge through continuing legal education. From the welcome reception to the gala and all of the panels and networking events in between, this conference is the place to mix and mingle, learn and share, with the best of the South Asian legal community.


With this toolkit, you will be able to convey this value to your superiors and justify the investment. 


General Tips

Many employers’ budgets for travel and training may require that you justify the expense of attending in-person programming like the SABA Annual Conference. Here are some things you may want to consider:


 1.   Focus on what you will specifically bring back to your firm or organization as return for the investment. For example, the SABA Annual Conference can offer the following benefits: 


  • Knowledge. The SABA Annual Conference offers a variety of learning opportunities – from panel discussions, workshops and keynote speakers. You can offer to prepare and deliver a short presentation to your colleagues to share what you learned. That way, others in your department will get the benefits of your attendance, too.  
  •  Continuing Education Credit. This is a great way to earn continuing education credits and can be a very time-efficient way to meet your CLE requirements compared to registering for multiple seminars or webinars.
  • Networking. By attending the SABA Annual Conference you will have the opportunity to build relationships with South Asian attorneys and leaders from a variety of practice areas and industries. You will also have the chance to meet with current and potential clients and government officials. We have several opportunities to network at the SABA Annual Conference including:
    • Meetings and receptions held by various SABA sections and committees;
    • SABA’s kickoff reception;
    • The SABA foundation benefit;
    • Plenary lunches; and
    • Our annual gala. 

2.   Be ready to articulate why your firm or organization should pay for you to attend the SABA Annual Conference – this can be done by calculating your anticipated expenses and return on investment. 


  • Expenses. Your expenses are affected by a number of factors, and may include the following:  
    •  Program registration – registration rates will vary based on when you register, but all registration information is available here;
    • Transportation – this includes transportation to Atlanta and taxis, car rental or mileage and parking reimbursement if you are driving to Atlanta;
    • Lodging – we will have a special rate, if you book in advance and while available, at the W Midtown (between $179-$199) for the period of June 15 through June 26;
    • Food – while many meals will be provided as part of your conference registration, you may incur additional expenses for other meals. 
  • Return on Investment. Let's face it: many benefits from program attendance are hard to quantify and will be different for each attendee. For example, you may highlight the list of continuing education sessions you will be attending. In addition, many who have attended in the past agree that a top benefit of attendance is networking value. Where else can you find so many South Asian attorneys at the same place and the opportunity to learn about so many different legal issues? Although networking is undoubtedly an incredibly important aspect of the SABA Annual Conference, it is also the toughest for which to quantify any value, so list out the specific events you plan to attend at the SABA Annual Conference specifically devoted to networking including:
    •  Meetings and receptions held by SABA sections and committees;
    • SABA’s kickoff reception;
    • The SABA Foundation Benefit;
    • Plenary lunches; and
    • Our Annual Gala. 

3.   Have a plan that shows who will cover for you while you are attending the SABA Annual Conference.
